Hot Interior Home Design Trends for 2009

Annually, just like clothing, interior design trends come and go. One year, bright and modern is all the rage, and the next year it is white, distressed and shabby chic. 2009 is no exception and here are our favorites for hot interior design treatments for 2009.

1) Decorative Black Metal is Making a Big Comeback – A great number of homeowners are turning to metal, and specifically wrought iron in their family houses. This can be home interior design touches done in wrought iron such as a pot rail in the kitchen, towel racks in the powder or bathroom. It can also be more extensive with the use of wrought iron on cabinet door hinges and handles; exterior home elements in metal instead of the customary painted wood and creating a fireplace mantel shelf or staircase railing out of cast and wrought iron for a unique yet refined designer touch.

2) The Lovely Mix of Wood and Metal – In 2009, many families, house constructing and home renovating companies are blending the richness of solid wood with the sleekness of metal. This treatment is popular on stairwells, terraces, fireplace mantels and even the front porch. Not only is this treatment visually stunning to look at, but the long lasting aspect means it is a sound investment that will last for decades.

3) The Outside of Home Revival of Corbels – Coming back in 2009 is the use of hardwood corbels and decorative corbels on the exterior of a home. So many DIY home owners are restoring old houses in trendy and historic districts, and the use of antique corbels and over-sized, large corbel embellishments is a must to bring back the true splendor of an older house.

4) The Focal Point Stairway – In the 80s and early 90s, staircases in house design were not important and a design element meant to disappear into the background. In 2009 and beyond, the stairs as a feature of the house is experiencing a big comeback. This trend includes the brave use of cast and wrought iron and real wood balusters and railings, as well as unique takes on paint finishes for stair parts.

Adding any of these touches to your home will be a valuable investment. Furthermore, these are not just trends that will be in today and out of style tomorrow. Instead, these would be considered interior design treatments that will serve your home well for many years to come.
