How To Deal With A Flooded Basement

Residents of Arlington know that their locality is prone to flooding.  Hence, when major storms are forecasted to affect their area, all homeowners prepare for all sorts of damage that is expected to be brought about by the rain, which normally includes a flooded basement.

As more storms are expected, local citizens are cautioned to implement all forms of safety measures and not to drive into any standing water on the road.  Arlington is considered to be the smallest independent county in the United States.  It is a tourist site, which is likewise considered as one of the best places in America to live and visit.  Despite being a world-class tourist, residential and business spot, it is a fact that the area has a record of being flooded annually, especially during the rainy and stormy seasons. As such, residents who live at the proximity of the riverbanks relocate their livestock and other animals to higher grounds; and businesses which are often at the mercy of the floodwaters do their best to install sandbags in front of doors and other potential entrances of water from the river as an effort to hedge off flooding.

Most flooded basement in Arlington is due to the overflow of water from the rivers.  Majority of the residents have often experienced and encountered flooding most of their lives and are perfectly aware of what they must do in order to save their homes, movable possessions and livestock.  The first of the many steps in any forecasted flood situations is to move everything as high up as possible since there is no telling how high the water could rise.

After the floodwater has receded or subsided, it is recommended that Arlington residents should now assess the situation before entering their homes to make sure that the structure is safe for entry and inspection.  Given the fact that most basement flooding are covered by insurance, photos and other means of proof should be prepared in order to file the insurance claim.

The next phase that needs to be accomplished immediately is the extraction of water.  This is done by using a wet vacuum pump or a submersible water pump.  It the water in the basement is several feet high, the recommended quantity of water that should be removed daily must be two to three feet or one-third of the approximate water volume present.

Once all visible water has been taken out, all the affected surfaces must be scrubbed clean by warm soapy water and rinsed with clean running water.  It is suggested that a disinfecting solution is applied or sprayed on the contaminated surfaces to stop the propagation of pathogens and help eliminate any lingering foul smell.

After the basement has been cleaned and disinfected, the whole area must be dried properly by using electric fans and a dehumidifier.  A once flooded basement must not be occupied or used yet again if it is not totally dried because the presence of dampness and moisture paves way for secondary problems in the form of mold and mildew growth.
